Books

Over the years, the Institute has published documentaries, books, art prints, and notecards that
have helped support our daily financial needs. Though we are all volunteers and pay no salaries,
operational bills continue to fill our mailboxes. We’d like to thank all benefactors who have
supported us through the years. Though we are a small non-profit organization, we have
accomplished beautiful, even mighty deeds! Forever our thanks go to you - and to God!

IN THE MIDST OF CHAOS, PEACE

In response to Pope John Paul's letter to artists to promote the Catholic faith through "artistic evangelization", three well-known names in the field of sacred art have collaborated to produce this beautiful art book filled with visual and spiritual meditations. Sister Wendy Beckett, famed BBC and PBS art critic, presents her always unique meditations for each of the 54 wonderful silhouettes by the two foremost Catholic paper-cutting artists,

Saint Bernadette Tetralogy: A Four-Volume Collection of Reflections, Prayers, Stories, & Inspirational Art

It is evident that an author who ardently loves the humble Saint Bernadette of Lourdes wrote this beautifully compiled book. Four previously published volumes have been, for the first time, combined into a single 386-page book with full-color illustrations by a variety of artists from the United States and beyond.

Behold The Women

The author of BEHOLD THE WOMEN once heard from a Sister of Charity of Cincinnati who mentioned she was going to see the popular musical Nunsense at the theater. Eager to hear her opinion, Dan asked her the next day if she had enjoyed it. The humble nun looked him straight in the eyes and replied, “I think we deserve better.” That single sentence inspired the artist to begin creating a collection featuring over two hundred rare photographs and many stories about nuns from earlier times.

A collection of visual and literary art that comes together as a melody and lyric to make divine music and song. It takes the reader beyond all image or word to Christ who is the Image and Word of God.

John Michael Talbot, Catholic musician and composer

A work that pleasures the eye, warms the heart, and elevates the soul. This book is a successful blend of three talents that will never fail to delight and inspire.

Joan Carroll Cruz, Catholic author

The silhouette has always held an enigmatic place in the history of art. This collection of papercuts beautifully displays that mystery, and Sister Wendy Beckett's unique commentary adds the necessary strength of the Gospel

'Chaos' exists only in the title of this book. It is childlike in its simplicity and deeply devout. Peace."

Virginia Broderick, Catholic artist

Dan Paulos creates silhouettes of peace. Discreetly, they whisper a message of pure giving, secret gardens of joy, and radiant blessings. Indeed, where art becomes an exercise in prayer, only then is it truly sacred art. The humble papercutting artist of Albuquerque and friend of the late Sr. Mary Jean Dorcy, gives beauty an old-new name, that of selflessness, source of peace.

Rev. Johann G. Roten, S.M., Director, International Marian Research Institute

It is no small task to write the story of a saint as an autobiography, incorporating the saint's own experiences and words. But Dan Paulos has done this well, with unique empathy, wholesome insight and humor. Both children and adults, reading I, Bernadette, will enjoy as I did, the sunny spirit and sturdy, enduring faith of the little saint of Lourdes, so beloved by Our Lord and by His holy mother, Mary.

VIRGINIA BRODERICK Artist. Liturgical Designer

Dan Paulos has given us a refreshing new biography of Saint Bernadette of Lourdes, written from a unique first-person point-of-view. Dan's goal of re-introducing Saint Bernadette to a new generation succeeds, for his down-to-earth narrative tells Bernadette's story in a style simple enough for young readers of middle school age, and engaging enough to hold their attention. Older children and adults also will keep turning the pages, for Dan paints an inspiring portrait of this beloved saint and her miraculous encounter with the Blessed Mother.

Author, Sisters in Crisis

From the first words of the Introduction to the last page of this book we have in I, Bernadette, a most interesting and charming story of the saint... an original concept of the saint telling her own story in her own words. It is an inspirational book that I highly recommend. We have here another treasure from the multi-talented Dan Paulos, one of St. Bernadette's most ardent devotees.

JOAN CARROLL CRUZ Author. The Incorruptible

Empathy is a big word, but it says well what Dan Paulos is attempting in his very special biography of Saint Bernadette. Putting oneself in somebody's place, getting under his/her skin, resonating with somebody's feelings, sharing in a person's suffering and joy: all of these are empathy. In our case, we should add "holy empathy." Dan's rendering of Bernadette's portrait is not only highly intuitive, but also deeply moving. It brings to life "holiness" at its best: as divine gift graciously given, graciously received, and generously shared.
